{"id":9171,"date":"2021-09-14T10:34:00","date_gmt":"2021-09-14T10:34:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arliemediadesign.com\/?p=9171"},"modified":"2025-03-21T10:44:20","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T10:44:20","slug":"creating-a-happy-workplace-at-heart-of-kent-hospice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.happy.co.uk\/blogs\/creating-a-happy-workplace-at-heart-of-kent-hospice\/","title":{"rendered":"Creating a Happy Workplace at Heart of Kent Hospice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Banish appraisals<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;We&nbsp;had them for years, nobody was keen on them.&nbsp;Instead&nbsp;we use a snapshot three times a year, built around our behaviours and values and personal development.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pets at work<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;We let colleagues bring their pets into work in our Hospice. Definitely a way to help people feel happy&nbsp;and our patients loved them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Liberating Structures:\u00a0<\/strong>&#8220;I attended Happy&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"\/leadership-and-personal-development\/personal-development-programmes\/liberating-structures-immersion-workshop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Liberating Structures workshop<\/a>. They\u00a0were revolutionary for me, to enable me to fully engage everybody\u00a0in our meetings and events.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Colleagues not staff:<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8220;Don&#8217;t use the word staff. Use &#8216;colleagues&#8217;, it is just more adult-to-adult.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Stop making decisions:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Remove yourself as a leader from decision-making. Leave your people to make the key decisions.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Weekly survey:<\/strong><strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>&#8220;We introduced a weekly happiness rating, just 4 questions: what&#8217;s good, what&#8217;s not, what&#8217;s changed&nbsp;and how happy do you feel.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key behaviours to fulfil the values<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;I care. I learn. I own. I improve.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The key mindset<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;I am curious about improving care.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Repeat, Repeat, Repeat<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Continually reinforce the behaviours.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Share the book:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Once I discovered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.happy.co.uk\/the-happy-manifesto\/\"><em>the Happy Manifesto<\/em><\/a>, I gave it to all staff, at both HOKH and now at Whizz&nbsp;Kidz.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Freedom within boundaries:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Set the guidelines and give people freedom within them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Break the rules:<\/strong>&nbsp;&#8220;Encourage colleagues to find the&nbsp;rules that don\u2019t make sense, and banish them.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Need to feel valued, their health and wellbeing:<\/strong>&nbsp;Send thank you and birthday cards to every member of the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Create a safe space:<\/strong>&nbsp;Add a &#8216;freedom to speak up&#8217; guardian \u2014 somebody to help someone who has a concern, they won\u2019t do it for them but will support them through that process.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Here are some ideas for creating a great culture from Sarah Pugh, now Chief Executive of Whizz Kidz, about her time as CEO at Heart of Kent Hospice \u2014 all taken from her talk at the 2021 Happy Workplaces Conference.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":9172,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[29,24,26,25],"tags":[],"blog-post-type":[35],"class_list":["post-9171","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-conference-updates","category-henrys-blog","category-leadership","category-the-happy-manifesto","blog-post-type-blog-with-image"],"acf":{"read_or_watch_time":"Read length: 5 min read"},"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v26.2 (Yoast SEO v26.2) -
