{"id":8159,"date":"2013-01-17T16:15:00","date_gmt":"2013-01-17T16:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arliemediadesign.com\/?p=8159"},"modified":"2025-03-15T16:20:09","modified_gmt":"2025-03-15T16:20:09","slug":"pick-your-own-manager","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.happy.co.uk\/blogs\/pick-your-own-manager\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cPick Your Own Manager\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Idea is Spreading<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.happy.co.uk\/blogs\/henrys-talk-to-worldblus-freedom-at-work-conference\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">written before<\/a>\u00a0on the idea of letting people choose their manager, as they are going to be best placed to know who could really motivate and challenge them. I\u2019m delighted to see the idea spreading. Several organisations we\u2019ve worked with at Happy People now let their staff choose their manager. And all report that its created a better and more effective workplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a recent talk I gave at London Business School, in which I called on the audience to let people pick their manager, somebody came up to me and explained that at Accenture (one of the world\u2019s largest consultancy firms), where she worked, you could choose. Apparently they do have a manager on each project they work on but long-term support comes from a mentor that they decide on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">If it works for Bradley\u2026.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading Bradley Wiggin\u2019s autobiography, My Time, one thing that struck me was that a key turning point was when he decided to drop his coach and choose another one. If he hadn\u2019t been able to do that, he might never have won the Tour de France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you want your people to get the coaching and support \u2013 and challenge \u2013 that they need to become a champion? Of course you do.
