We first did this in August 2019 with a four-day week for just one month (giving an extra three days of annual leave, pro-rata).<\/p><p>In September, we voted on how everyone thought it went. The verdict was that 94% enjoyed the extra time off, and 53% said they got as much done in four days, though 31% felt it made them more stressed. However, 44% of staff said they&#8217;d like to do it again and 44% wanted to make it two months.<\/p><p>In 2020, the senior leadership team extended the Productivity Summer to seven weeks including the bank holiday, giving everyone an additional six days of annual leave, pro-rata. The vote was 16-1 to go for a permanent four-day week, as long as the initial six months were successful. Happy joined the national 4 Day Week trial from June 2022, alongside over 60 other UK organisations in the pilot.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-primary ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">This was a huge success\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and in December 2022, our people voted to make this permanent. The results of the survey that informed the decision to go permanent showed:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-primary ); text-align: var(--text-align);\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><ul><li>77% of staff were sticking to the 32-hour week, with 23% working only one or two hours over<\/li><li>Everybody says they are getting as much done as they did before<\/li><li>Everybody says their wellbeing is better<\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p>The main requirement of the change to the four-day week was that it would not impact on the service our clients received. Working days can be intense and having a break in the middle of the week means I can step away from it and come back to work, calmer and more compassionate.\"<\/p>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ca35bb8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ca35bb8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Feedback from our June 2023 staff survey<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6921135 e-flex e-con-boxed e-con e-parent\" data-id=\"6921135\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"e-con-inner\">\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ef4ffad e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"ef4ffad\" data-element_type=\"container\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1013d32 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"1013d32\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How did we ensure the four-day week was a success?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c4b7c67 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c4b7c67\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>All of our people agreed to new principles, set by an Action Group (a small group of staff who expressed an interest in making the 4 day week a success, including the Managing Director).\u00a0<\/p><p>This included agreeing to improve our productivity, such as reducing the length of meetings, being more focused and cutting out distractions.<\/p><p>All of our people were offered training and support, such as an\u00a0<a href=\"\/leadership-and-personal-development\/personal-development-programmes\/five-day-productivity-blitz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">internal Five Day Productivity Blitz training course.<\/span><\/a><\/p><p>Rather than all taking the same day off, teams decide internally which days they will work. This ensures cover for our clients. For example, if one day is full of meetings you\u2019ve not got a lot of time to do your work. It can also be tough to arrange meetings now, as everyone has different working days. But it\u2019s great. Before we changed, for a long time I had a compressed working week. Now, my non-working day is on a Monday, and I still do a compressed week so that I can have Friday afternoons off as well. I do around 10 hours a day. For example, if one day is full of meetings you\u2019ve not got a lot of time to do your work. It can also be tough to arrange meetings now, as everyone has different working days. But it\u2019s great. Before we changed, for a long time I had a compressed working week. Now, my non-working day is on a Monday, and I still do a compressed week so that I can have Friday afternoons off as well. I do around 10 hours a day. It\u2019s a lot, but I have young grandchildren and I look after them on Mondays and Friday afternoons, and they\u2019re not going to be little forever.
