(A 3 Month Update)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The six-month pilot of 70 organisations (including Happy) involved in the four-day working week has now been going for three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been some negative reporting in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2022\/08\/15\/uks-first-four-day-week-trial-battles-staff-confusion-rota-chaos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Daily Telegraph<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-11112953\/Companies-taking-four-day-working-week-say-ISNT-working.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Daily Mail<\/a>. I can\u2019t imagine why those papers would seek to pour scorn on something that would improve people\u2019s working conditions. The Telegraph did contact me, and it was clear that the only thing they were interested in was any problems with the four-day week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">44% productivity improvement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/claire-daniels-trio-media_4dayweek-4dayworkweek-pr-activity-6965223653680504832-sxip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">here on LinkedIn<\/a>, Clare Daniels explains how the articles distorted what she said, and that in fact, they have performed 44% better with people working 20% less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To their credit, though, The Telegraph has written a further article on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/business\/2022\/08\/24\/atom-bank-rushes-defend-four-day-working-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Atom Bank<\/a>\u00a0who report a fourfold increase in job applications and days lost to sickness dropping from 230 to 72. \u201cWe firmly believe the four-day week is the future of working life,\u201d said Anne-Marie Lister, the bank&#8217;s chief people officer.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Times also has this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/article\/could-a-four-day-week-work-3j7w2sk73\">report on Adam Bank<\/a>, with 92% of staff saying they are more efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has been a far more considered view in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/money\/2022\/aug\/18\/four-day-week-trial-uk-workers-joys-challenges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Guardian<\/a>, keeping track of people over their first four weeks. \u201cNow I feel renewed,\u201d explains Digger Mosey. \u201cI can\u2019t waste time in the week anymore and I feel much more motivated. I honestly can\u2019t think of any downsides, since everyone is getting their work done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The United Arab Emirates has now adopted a standard 4.5 day week, and the town of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.khaleejtimes.com\/uae\/4-day-workweek-in-sharjah-traffic-accidents-down-40-employees-productivity-increases\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sharjah has gone for four days<\/a>, which has resulted in a significant drop in the emission of gases from cars and a 40% reduction in traffic accidents!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">100-80-100<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The key concept is 100-80-100. That means you get 100% of your salary for working 80% of the time, as long as you keep to 100% productivity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how is it going at Happy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remarkably well:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>100% say they are working the 32-hour week, or just an hour or two more.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100% say they are getting as much done as before, when they worked 37.5 hours<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>100% say their overall wellbeing is better<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The comments back this up: \u201cI am loving having a day off to be outside and active, I am generally feeling much happier and in turn enjoying work so much more.\u201d<br><br>Another adds: \u201cit\u2019s very exciting to have a day off and be able to do whatever you want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:20px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u201cI\u2019m learning how to be more focused\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>And what has been really interesting is that the increased focus on being more productive seems to mean that instead of working later hours in their four days, people are actually finishing work on time: \u201cI\u2019m learning how to be more focused in a shorter period of time and have less procrastination.\u201d<br><br>Another comments: \u201cI am much better at finishing on time now than I was before!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And another: \u201cI&#8217;m more focused and feel good about sticking to my hours &#8211; I don&#8217;t feel guilty, while before I would feel that if I was not carrying on over my hours to complete some work sometimes. I&#8217;m sure that made me less productive!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People seem far more satisfied with their work: \u201cHaving much more focused time feels good too &#8211; I am enjoying finishing work feeling like I have achieved a lot with my day.\u201d<br><br>It isn\u2019t that there are no issues. One colleague says that \u201cit feels much busier than usual as I come back to a busy inbox.\u201d Another suggests \u201cdays are slightly longer and feel &#8216;busier&#8217; so I find on working days I feel more mentally exhausted.\u201d<br><br>And, personally, I do take between 30 and 60 minutes on either the Friday or the Sunday to sort email so I don\u2019t return on Monday to a huge backlog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Careful Preparation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It does need careful preparation. When we tried it for a month,\u00a0<a href=\"\/blogs\/a-4-day-week-let-s-start-with-a-4-day-august\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">back in 2019<\/a>, a majority got as much done as before but some people felt more stressed.<br><br>This time we prepared for it four months in advance. We created an Action Group to explore everything that would be needed.
